  7.  IBM 5.25" EXTERNAL FLOPPY
  8.  
  9.      Customers have reported that using IBMCACHE and EMM.SYS together in a
  10.      Model 60 caused the IBM external floppy controller to fail when the
  11.      IBMCACHE size was less than 512K bytes.
  12.  
  13.  EMM LOADS, BUT CHKMEM SHOWS NO EXPANDED MEMORY
  14.  
  15.      This usually means another device driver or program is conflicting with
  16.      EMM.  Check the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for other devices
  17.      drivers.
  18.  
  19.      An example would be if you find the command DEVICE=VEM.SYS, remove it;
  20.      it's the device driver for a program called Above Disk, which is one of
  21.      the drivers which are incompatible with EMM.
  22.  
  23.  ABOVE BOARD 2 PLUS DOESN'T BOOT IN 50Z
  24.  
  25.      You can identify Above Board 2 Plus's that may have this problem by
  26.      looking at the ASIC (a big square chip) closest to the right-hand side
  27.      of the board (the end towards the back of the computer).
  28.  
  29.      If the first number on the ASIC is "LIA4352" call Intel Customer
  30.      Support for assistance ** UNLESS ** the part number on the board (next
  31.      to the serial number) is 301705-002, 301706-002, 301707-003, 301708-003
  32.      or higher revision (last number after dash).
  33.  
  34.  MESSAGE 111 ?????
  35.  
  36.      This message usually indicates a reserved memory conflict in your
  37.      computer, overlapping extended memory addresses, but could also be a
  38.      defective or incompatible SIMM.  Check for other boards (such as the
  39.      IBM Token Ring adapter) using the same memory address as the Above
  40.      Board.  Then use the Reference Diskette to change the memory addresses
  41.      to avoid the conflict. Run the MCATEST utility to check if any SIMMs
  42.      are defective.
  43.  
  44.      If you get this error during boot-up or while loading a program on an
  45.      IBM Model 70 after installing an Above Board MC32, check the
  46.      motherboard of the Model 70.  If the SIMM connectors are under the hard
  47.      drive, you may need a revised MC32.
  48.  
  49.  EMM REPORTS ALL MEMORY BAD
  50.  
  51.      EMM will report memory as bad if a ROM uses the first page frame of the
  52.      EMM window.  To check expanded memory, EMM uses the first page of the
  53.      page frame.  If a ROM uses that page, EMM can't run its memory test and
  54.      will report all memory as bad.  Use the EXPF parameter to move the page
  55.      frame to a different, non-conflicting location.
  56.  
  57.      Also, make sure the part number of the memory chips in the SIMMS end in
  58.      9 and not 8 (for example TM4256GU9, not TM4256GU8).
  59.  
  60.  SOFTSET MESSAGE "BACKUP OF TRACK 0 ALREADY EXISTS"
  61.  
  62.      If you use the Above Board 2 Plus option diskette and receive this
  63.      error, make a copy of the option diskette, go into the BACKUP
  64.      subdirectory and erase the OLDTRK0 file.  Then, retry the installation.
  65.  
  66.  "ERROR: THE ABOVE BOARD MC ROM COULD NOT READ THE HARD DRIVE..."
  67.  
  68.              The Above Board MC ROM could not read the hard drive to check
  69.              for an Above Board IADF."
  70.  
  71.      The Above Board MC ROM displays this error message when it cannot read
  72.      drive C.  This happens when the Above Board MC ROM address is lower
  73.      than the disk controller ROM address (for example, if the Above Board
  74.      MC ROM is located at C800 and the disk controller ROM is at DC00).  Be
  75.      sure you have run SOFTSET.  This will remove any unneeded Above Board
  76.      iADF file, but you will see this message as long as the Above Board MC
  77.      ROM executes before the disk controller ROM.  You can use your
  78.      computer's Reference Diskette to move the ROMs for these two boards to
  79.      eliminate this warning message.  Use one of the following methods (the
  80.      method you should use depends on your disk controller type):
  81.  
  82.      1.  If you can change the disk controller's ROM address using your
  83.          computer's Reference Diskette, move it to an address below the
  84.          address used by the Above Board MC ROM.  For example, if the Above
  85.          Board MC ROM is located at CC00, move the disk controller ROM to
  86.          C800.
  87.  
  88.      2.  If you can't change the disk controller ROM address using your
  89.          computer's Reference Diskette but you have the option to disable
  90.          it, then disable the disk controller ROM and move the Above Board
  91.          MC ROM to the highest available address (usually DC00).  Enable the
  92.          disk controller ROM again.  This should force the disk controller
  93.          ROM to an address below the Above Board MC ROM.
  94.  
  95.      3.  If the disk controller ROM address can't be changed and you can't
  96.          disable the disk controller using your computer's Reference
  97.          Diskette, then follow these steps:
  98.  
  99.          ■   Power down the system
  100.          ■   Remove the disk controller
  101.          ■   Boot with your computer's Reference Diskette and change the
  102.              Above Board MC ROM address to the highest available address
  103.              (usually DC00 -- if there is a conflict at DC00, choose the
  104.              next lower Above Board MC ROM address until you find a value
  105.              which does not cause a conflict).
  106.          ■   Power down the system
  107.          ■   Re-install the disk controller
  108.          ■   Boot with your computer's Reference Diskette.  Answer 'N' to
  109.              the question "Automatically configure the system? (Y/N)."
  110.          ■   Choose "Set configuration" from the Main Menu.  Choose "Change
  111.              configuration" from the submenu.  Verify that the system setup
  112.              shown is correct and press F10 to save the configuration.
  113.  
  114.      The Above Board MC ROM should now execute after the disk controller
  115.      ROM, and the warning message should no longer appear.
  116.  
  117.  QUIKMEM2 MAXIMUM RAMDISK SIZE
  118.  
  119.      The maximum size of a QUIKMEM2 RAMdisk is 8Mb, even with EMM 4.0.
  120.  
  121.  LOW LEVEL FORMATS ON PS/2 SYSTEMS
  122.  
  123.      If you lose a hard disk boot sector in a PS/2 computer and you need to
  124.      do a low level format, FDISK or FORMAT won't work.  Follow these steps
  125.      (this is for experts only!):
  126.  
  127.      1.  Start the computer with its reference disk
  128.      2.  Press Enter at the IBM logo screen.  The next screen you see will
  129.          be a menu.
  130.      3.  Instead of selecting a menu option, press Control-A. This accesses
  131.          IBM's "secret" hard disk format and diagnostics.
  132.      4.  Select Format.  Be prepared to wait from 20 minutes to 2 hours
  133.          while your hard disk is reformatted.
  134.  
  135.  "ERROR READING DRIVE A:" IN IBM MODEL 50/60'S
  136.  
  137.      (Field report)  Several users have reported that their IBM Models 50
  138.      and 60 can't read 720K-byte diskettes.  The "Error reading Drive a:"
  139.      error occurs when the user is running programs (such as SOFTSET) from
  140.      the disk or trying to copy from the disk.  This is not a problem with
  141.      the Above Board software; it's a problem with the Models 50 and 60.
  142.      You can solve this problem by adding the DASDDRVR.SYS command to your
  143.      CONFIG.SYS file. You can get DASDDRVR.SYS software from your local IBM
  144.      dealer.
  145.  
  146.      NOTE:   This problem is unrelated to the reference disk errors that can
  147.              occur after you copy the Intel Option Disk.
  148.  
  149.  CHKMEM DOESN'T COUNT ALL EXTENDED MEMORY
  150.  
  151.      When certain memory-resident programs (such as HIMEM.SYS, IBM's Cache,
  152.      and PC-Kwik) are installed, CHKMEM reports less than the total amount
  153.      of extended memory in the computer.
  154.  
  155.      With HIMEM.SYS installed all of the extended memory is reconfigured as
  156.      XMS memory (for DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.0) and is no longer visible to
  157.      CHKMEM. Use the DOS 5.0 MEM utility or check the memory usage under
  158.      Windows for an accurate extended memory check (in the Program Manager,
  159.      open HELP, then ABOUT, it should display the memory amount).
  160.  
  161.      With IBM's Cache or PC-Kwik the difference between the total memory in
  162.      the computer and the amount that CHKMEM reports is equal to the amount
  163.      that the resident programs have allocated for themselves.
  164.  
  165.      IBM's cache and PC-KWIK use interrupt 15 to reduce the amount of total
  166.      extended memory by the size of the cache. By doing this, other software
  167.      (including CHKMEM) is unaware of the extended memory that the cache
  168.      software is using.
  169.  
  170.  COMPUTERS WITHOUT A HARD DRIVE
  171.  
  172.      If you're using a PS/2 computer from which the hard drive has been
  173.      removed, use "DEVICE=EMM" in the config.sys file to initialize the
  174.      memory on an Above Board 2 Plus or boot from the OS/2 boot disk that
  175.      comes with the Above Board 2 Plus.
